If you suddenly find yourself unable to upload images, the most common reason is a file permissions issue on your server. WordPress requires permission to “write” files to the wp-content/uploads folder. If those permissions are changed—sometimes by a security plugin or a server update—the upload will fail with an “unspecified error.”
Other potential causes include reaching your hosting disk space limit or a conflict with a recently installed plugin. If your server’s “temporary” folder is full, WordPress also won’t have a place to put the image while it processes it. Diagnosing this requires a look at your server’s error logs.
